Our South America road trip continues through Peru! 🚗🌎
After exploring the dusty northern coast of Peru, we leave Huarmey and continue south toward Barranca, getting closer and closer to Lima, the huge capital of Peru.
We decide to take a shorter driving day after several long days on the road. But our journey doesn't start quite as smoothly as planned. Shortly before reaching Barranca, we are stopped by the police and have our first unpleasant encounter with corruption during our road trip.
Once in Barranca, however, things get much better. We explore the city center, discover the beautiful yellow church on the main square and enjoy some delicious Peruvian food. We then walk towards the Pacific Ocean and visit Parque Mirador Grau, where we get a fantastic view over Barranca and the coast.
From there, we head down to the beach, walk along the Pacific coast and climb up to a viewpoint with three crosses overlooking the ocean. We then continue to the impressive Cristo Redentor de Barranca, a huge statue overlooking the city and coastline.
We even take a local mototaxi back into town – something that immediately reminds Siri of Thailand!
The following days bring a completely different kind of adventure when our old Renault Mégane suddenly overheats on the road south of Barranca. Smoke comes from the engine and the coolant reservoir is completely empty. With the help of some incredibly friendly locals and a local mechanic, we try to figure out what has gone wrong.
After finally getting the car running again, we continue south and discover more of Peru's spectacular Pacific coastline, including the beautiful Playa La Calichera, with dramatic cliffs, waterfalls and natural pools.
This is another unforgettable chapter of our Peru road trip as we make our way toward Lima.
